Shakespeare Gym: Molière

Posted by: on May 15, 2014

June 3 – July 22, 2014 (no class July 1)

Tuesdays, 7-10pm

Cost: $350

This summer we’re mixing it up a little and taking the Chunnel to France.  Molière‘s theatre has some similarities to Shakespeare’s but also many differences as well.  We will be starting with a little detour though commedia dell’arte, a major influence on Molière and his writing.  We’ll then take a look at scenes from several comedies (Tartuffe, The Misanthrope, and The Miser most likely, to be confirmed), rather than sticking to a single play.  As always the focus will be on language and physicality, although Molière‘s texts will require some new approaches for the Shakespearean actor.

Fall 2013 Class: Julius Caesar now enrolling

Posted by: on August 13, 2013
Monday evenings, 7-10pm
Sept. 9 – Oct 28 (No class Oct. 14)
7 Classes
limited to 10 students
Cost: $350
Julius Caesar is filled with intense private scenes, large rhetorical speeches, and many fantastic two person scenes.  Written before any of the high tragedies, but nearing the height of Shakespeare’s powers, the mostly regular verse will allow us to focus on some technical verse-speaking issues as well.  To top it off, we’ll conclude class with a group visit to St. Anne’s to see the all-female, punk-rock, set in an all-female prison version imported from the Donmar!
This class is for students already familiar with the nuts and bolts of Shakespeare verse, but looking to “stay in shape” with their Shakespearean chops.
Please send an e-mail to if you are interested in enrolling.

Fall Schedule Announced…

8 classes.

Saturdays, 1-4 pm
Sept. 15th – Nov. 10th, 2012 (no class Nov. 3)    –  SOLD OUT – WAITING LIST ONLY

Cost: $350

An intensive exploration of one of Shakespeare’s most poetic plays.  Written entirely in verse, this play begins the eight play War of the Roses cycle which culminates in Richard III.  In the winter we will continue our journey with Henry IV, Pt. I and II.  Richard II features a dazzingly complex central characters (famously played by many great male and female actors), challenging monologues, and wonderful domestic and political scenes.  Students will be expected to work with scene partners between sessions.  Because of the rigorous commitment required, new students must have brief interview before being admitted to class.  Students are expected to already have a firm grasp of Shakespeare fundamentals and a desire to take their classical acting to the next level. To set up an interview or for more information, email:
